Working with WTO
Working at the WTO means supporting the rules, negotiations and evidence base of the multilateral trading system. The Secretariat does not make trade policy for its Members and it does not decide disputes in its own name. Its role is to provide impartial technical and administrative support to the organization’s councils, committees, negotiating groups, ministerial conferences and dispute-settlement processes. This requires staff who can handle complex economics, law and policy while remaining independent of national or commercial interests.

How to Apply for WTO Jobs
Once you find a suitable WTO vacancy on IGO Jobs or the WTO careers page, submit your application through WTO's official recruitment portal. Below is a guide on how to apply.
Official WTO application route ↗1Confirm the vacancy and basic WTO eligibility
Use the WTO external jobs platform to open the exact vacancy. WTO welcomes applications from nationals of WTO Members who are under 68 years old. Read the contract type, grade, technical requirements, working languages and closing date; fixed-term, short-term, consultant and internship routes are not interchangeable.
2Create a personal profile in the external jobs platform
The WTO external jobs platform is the required route to view, apply for and monitor vacancies. Register or sign in, complete the personal profile and submit against the specific announcement. Do not send a paper or emailed application as a substitute for the portal entry.
3Tailor evidence to the Secretariat function
Make each answer demonstrate the functions in the notice. For example, a legal opening needs evidence of trade-law research, treaty interpretation or dispute work; an economist post needs policy-oriented analysis; a committee-support role needs precise drafting and multilateral coordination. Explain your own contribution and result, not only your employer’s mandate.
4Prepare for WTO screening methods
The Human Resources Division and hiring division screen applications against the notice. For fixed-term positions, WTO may ask preselected candidates to take a home-based test or complete an asynchronous recorded video interview. Treat every instruction, time limit and integrity requirement from the official platform as part of the assessment.
5Complete the panel assessment if shortlisted
Final-shortlisted candidates are invited to a remote or in-person selection-panel interview and may complete a written test. The panel assesses behavioural and technical skills; depending on the vacancy, there may also be a presentation or assessment centre. Prepare concrete competency examples and a clear explanation of your technical judgement.
6Await the formal decision and reference check
The selection report goes to an internal board, which makes a recommendation to the Director-General. If selected, you receive an offer subject to satisfactory reference checks, normally communicated by Human Resources. The fixed-term process averages about four months, but timing depends on the vacancy. Never pay a recruitment fee or share bank details.
