About Armenia

Armenia is a compact South Caucasus republic with a highland landscape and urban life concentrated in its largest city. Tuff buildings, Soviet-era avenues and a café, design and technology scene shape that centre, while Gyumri has a creative atmosphere and Dilijan a greener setting.

Relocation is affordable by European hubs, though central rents have risen and quality varies. Daily routines are walkable in the main core, with taxis, buses and a single metro line supplementing cars. Summers are dry and hot, winters cold, and the elevation makes outdoor escapes part of ordinary life.

International careers concentrate in the same hub, where a UN Country Team works beside the Council of Europe, EU Mission, IFIs and humanitarian actors. The market is country-led: inclusive development, governance, rights, migration, refugee protection, health and resilience. It rewards candidates ready to work with national institutions and civil society in a changing South Caucasus context.

Working in Armenia

Yerevan is Armenia’s IGO employment hub. The UN Country Team comprises 20 resident and non-resident entities, including UNDP, UNICEF, IOM, UNHCR, WFP, WHO and UNIDO; the World Bank, IFC, IMF, Council of Europe and EU Mission add related work. Roles span development, migration, refugee response, governance, social policy and rights. Contract category is decisive: international appointments can carry organization-specific status, while national staff, consultants and Armenian-law employees may face different pay, tax, insurance, residence and relocation rules. Read the notice and legal employer.

Why Armenia

  • Concentrated multilateral country hub

UN entities, European institutions and IFIs work closely with national counterparts.

  • South Caucasus policy context

Roles connect migration, rights, resilience and development in a regionally significant setting.

  • Partnership-facing country programme work

Small teams reward practical coordination with ministries, communities and civil-society organizations.

How to apply for UN jobs in Armenia

Compare Armenia vacancies on IGOJobs.com, then use the official portal named by the legal employer. UN Secretariat roles, UN agencies, the Council of Europe, IFIs and humanitarian organizations do not share an application account. Read the duty station, grade and contract category closely; in a compact country office market, those details determine both eligibility and how much local engagement the role requires.

1Follow the correct employer portal

Use IGOJobs to compare the vacancy, then complete the application in the organization’s own system. UN Secretariat posts use UN Careers/Inspira; UNDP, UNICEF, IOM, UNHCR, WFP, WHO and the Council of Europe run separate career systems. Never send an unsolicited CV in place of the formal application requested by the notice.

2Build the required profile early

Create the employer-specific account before the deadline and complete all mandatory fields. In Inspira, the online application records education, employment history, languages and competencies; a CV is not a substitute. For every employer, tie dates, qualifications and achievements directly to the advertised minimum criteria.

3Tailor evidence for country programming

Show experience relevant to Armenia-facing work: development delivery, migration and protection, governance reform, social inclusion, public health, climate resilience, monitoring or partnership management. Armenian is often important for locally engaged roles; English and sometimes Russian may be useful elsewhere. State proficiency accurately and let the vacancy set the rule.

4Check category and work-status conditions

Distinguish internationally recruited staff from National Officer, General Service, consultancy, internship and Armenian-law roles. Ordinary foreign employment normally uses the workpermit.am process; Eurasian Economic Union citizens have a different exemption route, while staff of organizations with diplomatic status may use protocol documentation. Ask HR which status applies to the actual appointment.

5Prepare for assessment and offer checks

Expect written tests, technical assignments, competency interviews, reference checks or panels according to the employer. Before relocating, verify the legal employer, duty station, expected regional travel, salary and tax basis, insurance, contract duration, family documentation, relocation support and whether the organization will initiate the required status process.

Workpermit.am and diplomatic-status documentation

Ordinary foreign hires normally use Armenia’s work-permit and employment-based temporary-residence process, initiated online by the employer through workpermit.am. Citizens of EAEU member states are exempt from the work-permit requirement but use the relevant residence process. The MFA issues identification cards for staff of international organizations with diplomatic status; eligibility depends on the organization’s status and relevant agreement. This differs from ordinary documentation.

Armenia International Careers FAQs

Do I need Armenian nationality for an international organization job?

Not for every role. Internationally recruited posts can be open to eligible candidates, whereas National Officer, General Service and other locally recruited roles may require Armenian citizenship, local eligibility or a demonstrated ability to work with national institutions. The vacancy’s category and eligibility language control.

Is Armenian required for international roles in Armenia?

Often, especially for nationally focused programme, coordination and administrative roles. English is common in international teams, while Russian may also be useful in some settings, but neither substitutes for a stated Armenian requirement. Report your working level accurately and follow the vacancy’s required and desired languages.

Do Armenia-based UN organizations use one application account?

No. UN Secretariat roles use UN Careers/Inspira, but UNDP, UNICEF, IOM, UNHCR, WFP, WHO and the Council of Europe operate their own career systems. IGOJobs helps you compare openings, but the final application must be completed in the portal named by the legal employer on that vacancy.

Will I need a work permit to take a role in Armenia?

Usually, unless an exemption applies. Employers seeking to hire a foreign national use Armenia’s workpermit.am platform for work-permit and employment-based temporary-residence processing. EAEU citizens are exempt from the work-permit requirement, while eligible diplomatic-status staff follow a separate protocol route. Confirm your category with HR.

Are there meaningful duty stations beyond Yerevan?

Yerevan is the central duty station for the UN Country Team, IFIs, the Council of Europe and many partners. Roles may also involve travel or activity in Gyumri, Dilijan, border communities and other regions. The notice, not the country label, determines the expected field presence, security context and relocation package.

Can I apply without previous UN experience?

Yes, if you meet the notice’s criteria. Strong candidates map comparable public-sector, civil-society, research, humanitarian or private-sector experience to the role’s responsibilities and competencies. Previous UN experience is valuable only where specified; it cannot compensate for missing education, technical skills or years of experience.
