Job Description

The IAEA seeks a P-4 Legal Officer for its Nuclear and Treaty Law Section in Vienna. The officer will provide specialised nuclear-law expertise on safety, security and liability, prepare legal instruments and guidance, advise on the interpretation of international instruments and national legislation, and support the Agency’s Legislative Assistance Programme and missions to Member States.

Summary of Responsibilities

  • Implement Section projects on nuclear safety, security and liability
  • Provide legal expertise for Secretariat activities and Member State meetings under IAEA legal instruments
  • Develop guidance, analytical studies and recommendations on relevant instruments
  • Represent the Office of Legal Affairs and deliver legal advice during IAEA missions and events
  • Advise Member States on draft and enacted national nuclear legislation

Role Requirements

  • Juris Doctor or advanced law degree and admission to a national bar or equivalent
  • At least seven years of relevant experience including five years at international level, particularly within the United Nations system
  • Proven experience preparing legal drafts
  • Excellent written and spoken English
