Communicable Disease Specialist

Leads WHO technical support for Papua New Guinea’s prevention, surveillance and care for tuberculosis, HIV, sexually transmitted infections and viral hepatitis. The specialist develops disease-control strategies, improves information systems and community interventions, advises national counterparts and partners, and coordinates primary-health-care responses to communicable disease risks.

• Provide technical support for communicable-disease activities through primary health care
• Develop and implement intervention action plans for high-risk groups and environments
• Contribute policy advice and guidance on national communicable-disease strategies and health-system improvements
• Research and evaluate outbreak data, identify disease sources and recommend preventive responses
• Improve communicable-disease information systems and monitoring for universal health coverage
• Develop and deliver community-outreach activities on prevention, diagnosis and treatment
• Liaise with national counterparts, donors, partners and WHO technical departments to harmonise policies and strategies

• Master’s degree in medicine or public health
• At least seven years of progressively responsible professional experience in communicable diseases, including tuberculosis, drug-resistant tuberculosis, HIV, sexually transmitted infections and viral hepatitis surveillance, prevention and care
• Experience providing technical advice and services to national counterparts and partners on tuberculosis prevention, care and other communicable diseases
• Expert knowledge of English

• Training in major communicable diseases including tuberculosis, drug-resistant tuberculosis, HIV, sexually transmitted infections or viral hepatitis
• Experience preparing and implementing Global Fund grant proposals in developing countries
