Job Description

OHCHR seeks a UN Volunteer Associate Human Rights Officer in Apia to support Pacific human-rights capacity building, technical assistance research and monitoring. Working with the Human Rights Adviser for Samoa, Cook Islands and Niue, the officer will strengthen civic-space networks, assist engagement with international mechanisms, advance gender and environmental-rights work, and prepare reports.

Summary of Responsibilities

  • Strengthen civic-space networks for land and environmental human-rights defenders addressing climate-change impacts in Samoa, Cook Islands and Niue
  • Support partner engagement with the Universal Periodic Review, treaty bodies and special procedures
  • Advance work on women’s rights, gender equality, environmental rights, climate justice, economic empowerment, education and healthcare access
  • Draft internal and external reports, communications, briefings and statements for policy-making bodies
  • Conduct educational and promotional activities on human rights, gender equality, the environment and climate change
  • Undertake other assigned human-rights duties supporting the Pacific regional team

Role Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in human rights, law, political science, climate change or environment, international relations, community development, sociology, peace and conflict studies or a related field
  • Demonstrated interest or experience of up to two years in human rights law, climate change and environment, international relations, peace and conflict studies or a related area
  • Knowledge of international human-rights instruments and mechanisms
  • Good communication and analytical skills

Desired Criteria

  • Experience in capacity building for the promotion and protection of human rights
  • Experience in data collection and dissemination through various platforms
  • Previous volunteer experience or experience of another culture through studies, volunteer work or an internship
