Associate Civil Affairs Officer

Supports civil affairs work on protection of civilians, early warning, conflict analysis and local dialogue in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The volunteer works with authorities, civil society and mission partners to strengthen community protection and stabilization efforts.

Department: Civil Affairs Section

• Maintain contact with government, political, traditional, religious and civil-society leaders and explain the Mission’s mandate
• Analyze threats to civilians, community conflicts and political, security, social and economic developments
• Support early-warning and community protection mechanisms and participate in assessment and protection missions
• Facilitate confidence-building, dialogue, reconciliation and conflict management among local actors
• Coordinate with UN entities, non-governmental organizations and local partners on protection and stabilization activities
• Prepare timely reports and analytical briefs on conflicts, protection of civilians and stabilization
• Maintain results-based budgeting and partner databases and support early-warning information systems

• Relevant background in conflict studies, peace and conflict resolution, political science, international relations, development, security studies, public administration, governance, law, sociology, anthropology, human rights or another relevant social science
• Ability to live and work in difficult and potentially insecure field conditions
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office
• English is required
