Human Rights Officer

Monitors and documents human-rights conditions in eastern DRC, develops verified case files and trend reporting, supports the UN human-rights mandate through local engagement, and strengthens counterpart capacity while informing protection, advocacy and mission decision-making.

Department: United Nations Joint Human Rights Office

• Gather and report information on human-rights conditions through cooperation with UN actors and communities
• Keep supervisors informed of human-rights developments in the assigned area
• Prepare case files for authorities and the human-rights database
• Maintain working relationships with local authorities, international organisations and civil society
• Draft and coordinate reports, briefings and public human-rights communications
• Supervise accurate entry of verified cases and produce quality-controlled statistics and trend reports
• Coach and train national staff, government counterparts and implementing partners
• Facilitate implementation of the human-rights mandate in the assigned area

• Human-rights expertise
• Ability and willingness to work independently in austere, remote and potentially hazardous environments for prolonged periods and travel extensively within the area of operations
• Fluency in English and French

• Volunteer assignment via UNV with an indicated duration of 331 days
• Beni is a non-family duty station with volatile security and limited amenities
• The assignment may involve extensive travel and possible transfer within the area of operations
• Personnel must maintain appropriate vaccinations for service in the DRC
