About UNON

The United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) is one of the UN’s four major duty stations and the only UN headquarters in Africa and the Global South. Established in 1996, it represents the Secretary-General in Kenya and provides administrative, conference, operational, safety and security services to UNEP, UN-Habitat and other UN entities in Nairobi. By managing common premises and intergovernmental meetings, UNON enables UN programmes and global dialogue to operate from Kenya.

Working with UNON

Working at UNON means supporting a major UN duty station whose work enables many other organizations to deliver. Roles span conference services, administration, finance, procurement, HR, information management, security, facilities and communications, supporting UNEP, UN-Habitat and other entities. Work is Nairobi-based but multilateral in reach: teams manage shared services, meetings and common operations for a large UN community. Expect Secretariat processes, service standards and collaboration across agencies, cultures and technical fields.

Why Work at UNON?

  • Support Africa’s UN Headquarters

Enable the UN’s only headquarters in Africa and the Global South.

  • Make Multilateral Meetings Work

Support conferences, interpretation, facilities and logistics that turn global dialogue into decisions.

  • Build A Broad Secretariat Career

Develop transferable experience across shared services, operational delivery and the Nairobi UN community.

How to Apply for UNON Jobs

Once you find a suitable UNON vacancy on IGO Jobs or the UNON careers page, submit your application through UNON's official recruitment portal. Below is a guide on how to apply.

Official UNON application route ↗
1Search the UN Careers Portal for Nairobi opportunities

UNON is part of the United Nations Secretariat, so its staff openings are published on the United Nations Careers Portal. Search current openings by location, using Nairobi, Kenya, and review the full vacancy notice. Use IGO Jobs as a starting point if helpful, but apply only through the official **Apply Now** route in the corresponding UN Careers listing.

2Read the whole vacancy before starting an application

Check the position’s functional area, level, contract type, duty station, education, experience, language and competency requirements. UNON careers can support conference management, administration, procurement, finance, security, facilities and common services as well as the work of UNEP and UN-Habitat. Apply only where your evidence meets the mandatory requirements in that specific opening.

3Create an Inspira account and complete My Profile

Selecting **Apply** takes you to Inspira, the UN Secretariat’s online recruitment system. New external applicants must create an account, then complete the mandatory fields in **My Profile** before an application can be submitted. Keep the primary email address, telephone number and other contact information accurate, as recruitment communication is linked to that profile.

4Build a complete, role-specific Inspira application

Complete the online application with your education, employment history, skills, competencies and achievements, then write the required motivation statement for that particular UNON role. The UN describes the Inspira application as an extended online résumé used to assess eligibility and suitability. A separate résumé does not replace or supplement the completed online application unless the vacancy specifically requests a document.

5Review carefully and submit before the deadline

Check mandatory fields, dates, descriptions and the motivation statement, then submit before the deadline displayed in the job opening. A successfully submitted application cannot be changed for that opening. UN Careers says an automated confirmation is sent to the primary email address after submission, so retain it and continue monitoring both the account and email.

6Prepare for assessment and structured interview stages

Applicants whose qualifications fit the opening may be invited to a role-specific assessment. UN Careers identifies possible formats including written tests, asynchronous video interviews, work samples and assessment-centre activities, followed by a panel interview. Prepare evidence-based examples against the vacancy’s competencies and be ready to explain how your experience supports UNON’s service mandate.

Recruitment safety: No. The United Nations states that it charges no fee at any recruitment stage—application, interview, processing or training—and does not request bank-account information. Verify a UNON opportunity through the UN Careers Portal or official UNON channels. Treat payment requests, unofficial links and suspicious email messages as potential scams.

Frequently asked questions about UNON careers

Where do I apply for UNON jobs?+

UNON jobs are advertised through the United Nations Careers Portal because UNON is part of the UN Secretariat. Search the portal by location (Nairobi) and, where available, by department or office. Open the full job description and select Apply to move into Inspira, the official online recruitment system used for the application.

Do I need an Inspira account for UNON jobs?+

You need an Inspira account to apply for UN Secretariat openings. After registering, complete mandatory My Profile fields before beginning an application. UN applicant guidance says the profile’s contact information must remain current because hiring managers may use its email address or telephone number to contact candidates during recruitment.

What kinds of work does UNON recruit for?+

UNON supports UNEP, UN-Habitat and other entities, so vacancies can involve conference services, administration, procurement, finance, human resources, facilities, security and information management. The work is not limited to environmental or urban-policy roles. Use the individual job opening for the actual function and mandatory criteria.

What happens after I submit an UNON application?+

After application screening, candidates who meet the opening’s requirements may be invited to an assessment. UN Careers says this can include a written test, recorded video interview, work sample or assessment-centre activity, followed by a panel interview. The method depends on the vacancy, so check account messages and email.

Can I change an Inspira application after submitting it?+

Once submitted, an Inspira application cannot be changed for that opening. UN Careers says applicants receive an automated confirmation email after submission if their primary email remains valid. Check mandatory fields, dates and motivation statement before submitting, then save the confirmation and monitor the account for next steps.

Does UNON charge an application fee?+

No. The United Nations states that it charges no fee at any recruitment stage—application, interview, processing or training—and does not request bank-account information. Verify a UNON opportunity through the UN Careers Portal or official UNON channels. Treat payment requests, unofficial links and suspicious email messages as potential scams.
