Working with UNEP
UNEP is where environmental science, global diplomacy and practical public policy meet. Its mandate is broad—climate action, biodiversity, pollution, circularity, environmental law, finance and sustainable consumption—but its work is unified by the need to help governments and partners address environmental crises that cross borders and sectors. A career might involve assessing emissions and nature data, supporting negotiations, helping a ministry develop regulations, mobilizing green finance, coordinating a global campaign.
Why Work at UNEP?
Address the triple planetary crisis
Work on climate change, nature loss and pollution through global environmental cooperation.
Connect science, law and policy
Translate evidence into standards, finance and action that governments and partners can use.
Build solutions across economic sectors
Help make environmental priorities practical for energy, cities, industry and communities.
How to Apply for UNEP Jobs
Once you find a suitable UNEP vacancy on IGO Jobs or the UNEP careers page, submit your application through UNEP's official recruitment portal. Below is a guide on how to apply.
Official UNEP application route ↗1Identify the employing entity and appointment type
Read whether the role is a UNEP Secretariat post, a multilateral-environmental-agreement position, consultancy, internship, UN Volunteer or JPO opportunity. Confirm the grade, duty station, experience, language, education and eligibility requirements. Separate programmes have different routes even when their work is associated with UNEP.
2Use UN Inspira for staff vacancies and internships
UNEP’s official employment guidance states that all staff and internship applications must be submitted through UN Inspira. Create or access your Inspira profile, find the exact Job Opening and select Apply Now. Do not substitute an emailed CV for the completed UN application.
3Complete the Personal History Profile with environmental relevance
Record education, employment history, languages, skills and achievements directly in Inspira. Link technical experience to the actual subject in the announcement—such as climate, biodiversity, pollution, law, finance or data—and explain how your work informed decisions, implementation or partnerships.
4Follow the separate route for JPO and UN Volunteer opportunities
UNEP guidance states that JPO applications are submitted through the sponsoring government’s website, while UN Volunteer applications go through the candidate’s UNV roster account. Do not start those pathways in Inspira unless the relevant official posting explicitly directs you there.
5Submit the complete application before the published closure
Review every required profile field, screening answer and attachment before submitting. Check the time zone in the Job Opening and save your confirmation. Incomplete or late applications are not considered in the Secretariat process, so do not wait until the deadline to resolve access or upload problems.
6Prepare for Secretariat screening and assessment
The hiring office screens applications against the advertised requirements. Candidates under consideration can be invited to written or technical assessment and competency-based interview stages, followed by reference and administrative checks. Prepare examples of scientific judgement, partnership work and delivery relevant to the specific environmental mandate.
Recruitment safety: No. UNEP states that it does not charge fees for application, interview, processing or training and does not seek applicants’ banking information. Treat payment requests and unofficial job messages as potential fraud. Verify an opening through UNEP’s Work with us page and the relevant official recruitment portal.

Frequently asked questions about UNEP careers
Where do I apply for UNEP jobs?+
UNEP directs candidates for staff vacancies and internships to the UN Inspira portal. Create or update your candidate profile there, select the specific Job Opening and submit online. UNEP-associated JPO and UN Volunteer opportunities use different official routes—respectively the sponsoring government’s site and the UNV roster account—so always follow the notice.
What fields can I work in at UNEP?+
UNEP recruits environmental specialists and operational professionals across climate, nature, pollution, environmental law, finance, resource efficiency, data, communications, partnerships, procurement, HR and programme management. Its work can be based in UNEP divisions, regional offices, country projects or treaty secretariats. Read the exact entity and programme context before applying.
Do UNEP internships use the same application portal?+
Yes. UNEP’s official guidance says internships, like staff vacancies, are submitted through UN Inspira. Internship candidates must meet the academic eligibility described in the announcement; UNEP notes that no prior work experience is required. JPO and UN Volunteer programmes are separate and should be applied to through their specified sponsoring channels.
What makes a strong UNEP application?+
Show how your evidence, policy, legal, financial, technical or delivery work addresses the environmental result in the vacancy. Be concrete about the analysis produced, partners engaged, regulations supported, finance mobilized or programme outcome achieved. Environmental expertise alone is not enough: explain how it was made useful to governments, communities, institutions or decision-makers.
Does UNEP charge application fees?+
No. UNEP states that it does not charge fees for application, interview, processing or training and does not seek applicants’ banking information. Treat payment requests and unofficial job messages as potential fraud. Verify an opening through UNEP’s Work with us page and the relevant official recruitment portal.
