How to apply for UN jobs in United Arab Emirates

Where a vacancy is issued by the UN Secretariat, use UN Careers and Inspira; use IRENA Careers or each agency’s own portal for all other roles.
1Identify the actual employer and portal
Check the vacancy’s organization, duty station, contract type and closing date before applying. IRENA advertises through its employment pages, while WFP, UNHCR, UNICEF, WHO, FAO, UNODC and other employers maintain separate systems. Dubai Humanitarian is a host community, not a shared recruitment portal.
2Complete the employer-specific application
Create the requested online profile early and complete every mandatory field. Keep your CV, degree records, employment dates, references and work samples current, but submit only the documents requested. A profile in Inspira, IRENA or an agency system does not transfer to another employer.
3Tailor sector, language and regional evidence
Use measurable examples that match the work: renewable-energy policy, humanitarian logistics, procurement, supply chains, emergency operations, food systems, migration, health or partnerships. English is central across this market; Arabic can strengthen UAE or regional engagement. Follow the language requirements and proficiency level printed in the notice.
4Check appointment and residence eligibility
Distinguish internationally recruited, locally recruited, General Service, consultancy, internship, JPO and UAE-law roles. Ordinary employment typically needs an employer-sponsored work permit and residence process. Eligible staff of accredited international organizations can instead use the Ministry of Foreign Affairs International Organizations ID-card route. Do not assume either arrangement from the job title alone.
5Prepare for assessment and relocation
Expect written exercises, technical tests, case studies, interviews or reference checks. Before accepting, confirm the legal employer, contract duration, salary structure, medical insurance, pension, tax position, relocation support, office-attendance expectations and residence process. Obtain written HR guidance before cancelling an existing UAE visa or moving.
International Organizations ID cards and work permits
Ordinary UAE employment needs an employer-sponsored work permit and residence process. Staff of accredited international organizations may instead receive a UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs International Organizations ID card. The card is regarded as a residence permit and the mission applies for it; the applicant must not hold an active UAE residence visa when the card is requested. It is status-specific, not open work authorization.

Do I need UAE nationality for an international-organization role?
No. Many internationally recruited roles are open to eligible applicants of many nationalities; IRENA welcomes applications from all countries. General Service, locally recruited, consultancy and UAE-law positions can have different eligibility rules, including local residence or work authorization. The vacancy and legal employer decide.
Are international-organization jobs only based in Abu Dhabi?
No. Abu Dhabi is the principal base for IRENA and several UN and regional-policy offices. Dubai is the humanitarian logistics hub, with WFP’s UNHRD facility, UNHCR’s global stockpile and other agency operations at Dubai Humanitarian. The duty station affects commuting, employer, package, office attendance and travel requirements.
Does Dubai Humanitarian use one application portal?
No. Dubai Humanitarian is a host community and logistics free zone, not one shared UN recruitment system. WFP, UNHCR, UNICEF, WHO, UNFPA, UNRWA and other organizations operating there use their own portals, eligibility rules and assessment processes. Apply only through the employer and system named in the vacancy notice.
Which languages matter for UAE-based international roles?
English is central to the international market; IRENA specifies excellent written and spoken English for Professional and General Service categories. Arabic can be valuable for UAE or regional partner engagement, while another UN language may help in some roles. Treat the vacancy’s required and desired language fields as the controlling standard.
Does every international employee receive an ID card from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs?
No. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs International Organizations ID card is for eligible staff of accredited organizations and is requested by the mission. It is residence documentation, but eligibility depends on the institution and appointment. Consultants, local contracts, interns and ineligible dependants may follow different arrangements.
Do I need existing UAE work authorization before applying?
No. An eligible international appointment may use the employer-managed Ministry of Foreign Affairs ID-card route. Ordinary UAE employment uses employer-sponsored work-permit and residence procedures. Do not relocate on an assumption of sponsorship: verify the legal employer, contract type and immigration route after selection.
