Overview

Develops localised climate scenarios for the Chu and Issyk-Kul basins to strengthen Kyrgyzstan's glacial-lake outburst flood monitoring. The consultant downscales CMIP6 ensembles, produces glacier-melt and runoff inputs, integrates them into hazard models and trains national specialists to operate the tools.

Responsibilities

  • Review the MoES monitoring architecture and compile basin hydrometeorological records
  • Select and downscale at least three CMIP6 ensembles for 2030 and 2050 horizons
  • Bias-correct climate projections against Kyrgyzhydromet station data
  • Generate glacier-melt and runoff projections and at least five scenario simulations
  • Document precipitation, heatwave and freeze-thaw triggers relevant to flood generation
  • Integrate climate projections into hydrodynamic breach models for pilot lakes
  • Prepare bilingual training materials and train up to 20 MoES technical staff
  • Deliver datasets, scripts, documentation and the final climate-modelling report

Requirements

  • Advanced university degree in climatology, atmospheric sciences, hydrometeorology, physical geography or a closely related discipline
  • Minimum five years of professional experience in climate modelling or global-model downscaling for Central Asia or comparable mountain regions
  • Experience with CMIP5 or CMIP6 datasets and at least one statistical or dynamical downscaling technique
  • Working knowledge of mountain cryosphere processes and their links to glacial-lake outburst floods
  • Proven training and capacity-building experience with national institutions
  • Fluency in Russian and Kyrgyz with good working knowledge of English
