Working with UNV
Working with UNV means delivering through a UN volunteer assignment, not joining a conventional staff career stream. You can support a UN entity on national, international or online modalities, depending on the Description of Assignment. The work is field-facing and skills-led: volunteers contribute to development, humanitarian, peace and human-rights operations while bringing local knowledge, professional expertise and community engagement. Conditions, duration, entitlements and mobility depend on the specific assignment and category.

How to Apply for UNV Jobs
Once you find a suitable UNV vacancy on IGO Jobs or the UNV careers page, submit your application through UNV's official recruitment portal. Below is a guide on how to apply.
Official UNV application route ↗1Check the assignment arrangement and eligibility
Read the Description of Assignment before registering. Establish whether it is onsite or online, national or international, and which category applies. The current Conditions of Service set category-based experience criteria for onsite assignments, while the DoA states the precise duty station, language, skills, availability and other mandatory requirements.
2Create and verify a Unified Volunteering Platform account
Go to the Unified Volunteering Platform, select **Sign up now**, choose the candidate route and complete the account details. UNV requires candidates to be at least 18. Verify the account using the numeric code sent by email, accept the platform’s terms and conditions, then sign in to the candidate dashboard.
3Complete the Global Talent Pool profile fully
Open the dashboard task to complete your candidate profile and enter the required skills, education and professional-experience information. UNV says only complete profiles can be submitted and used for matching. Profiles can be created in English, French or Spanish; use English if you are fluent and want to be considered broadly for English-language assignments.
4Search published Descriptions of Assignment carefully
Use the **DoAs** tab and its filters to find assignments that match your expertise and preferred arrangement. Compare the tasks, location, category, duration and eligibility in the actual DoA. Keep the profile current even if no vacancy fits: UNV notes that some assignments are filled directly from the Global Talent Pool and are not published.
5Submit the assignment-specific application in UVP
Select **Apply** from the relevant DoA and complete the short application form, including the motivation statement, years of experience, availability and required self-declaration. Tailor the motivation statement to the assignment. UNV’s registration guidance says candidates may copy information from a CV into the profile, but cannot upload a CV or apply by email.
6Prepare for UNV and host-entity selection
UNV reviews profiles against the DoA and submits shortlisted candidates with their UNV profiles to the host entity. The host entity may use a written test, interview or another role-specific assessment. Following selection and UNV confirmation, the preferred candidate receives an offer and completes the formalities stated in that offer before appointment.

Where do I apply for UNV opportunities?+
Apply through the Unified Volunteering Platform (UVP), not by emailing a CV to UNV. Create a Global Talent Pool profile, complete every mandatory field and use the Descriptions of Assignment (DoAs) tab to find a suitable published opportunity. The official platform is the application record UNV uses for matching and shortlisting.
Are UNV assignments regular UN staff jobs?+
UNV assignments are not conventional UN staff posts. The published Description of Assignment sets the type, category, duty station, duration, duties, required experience and language requirements. UNV distinguishes onsite assignments from separate Online Volunteering opportunities, which are remote, task-based and non-contractual.
What are the basic eligibility requirements for an onsite UN Volunteer assignment?+
For onsite UN Volunteer assignments, the current Conditions of Service set an age range of 18 to 80 and category-based experience criteria: Community requires none, Associate at least one month, Specialist at least three years and Expert at least seven years. The specific DoA remains the final eligibility reference.
Must an opportunity be advertised for me to be considered?+
No. UNV says selected opportunities are published, but some assignments are filled by directly matching Global Talent Pool profiles and are never advertised. A complete, current profile therefore matters even if no open DoA matches today. UNV recommends that candidates revisit their account at least annually to keep it active.
What happens after I submit a UNV application?+
UNV recruiters review applications against the Description of Assignment and submit shortlisted candidates with their UNV profiles to the host entity. The host entity may use a test, interview or assessment. A selected candidate receives an offer only after UNV confirmation and must complete the stated formalities before appointment.
Is Online Volunteering paid employment?+
Online Volunteering is separate from an onsite UN Volunteer assignment. UNV describes it as remote, task-based and non-contractual, for up to 20 hours a week and a maximum of 12 weeks. Online Volunteers do not receive a living allowance, financial compensation or benefits, but can receive a certificate of appreciation after successful completion.
