About UNMAS

The United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) leads, coordinates and implements UN mine action to reduce threats from landmines, explosive remnants of war and improvised explosive devices. Established in 1997 within the Department of Peace Operations, it develops standards and policy, leads country responses and supports peace operations. UNMAS protects civilians, enables humanitarian access and mobility, builds national capacity, supports victims and helps affected communities recover safely after conflict.

Working with UNMAS

Working with UNMAS combines technical mine action with humanitarian, peacekeeping and development aims. Teams coordinate with authorities, UN entities, partners and donors on survey and clearance, risk education, weapons and ammunition management, data, policy and programme support. Careers range from field roles to management, finance, donor relations and political work. Most posts are country- or mission-specific and require experience for hazardous, complex settings; Secretariat vacancies are recruited through UN Careers and Inspira.

Why Work at UNMAS?

  • Protect Civilians Through Practical Action

Enable safe movement, humanitarian access and recovery where explosive hazards block communities.

  • Work Across Five Mine-Action Pillars

Blend clearance, risk education, victim assistance, advocacy and stockpile-management support.

  • Apply Expertise In Demanding Settings

Combine technical judgement and partnerships across peace operations and humanitarian emergencies.

How to Apply for UNMAS Jobs

Once you find a suitable UNMAS vacancy on IGO Jobs or the UNMAS careers page, submit your application through UNMAS's official recruitment portal. Below is a guide on how to apply.

Official UNMAS application route ↗
1Find a current UNMAS vacancy on UN Careers

UNMAS Secretariat vacancies are advertised through the United Nations Careers Portal, under the Department of Peace Operations. Search by job title, duty station or job family, then open the full notice. UNMAS recruitment includes headquarters, Nairobi and country-programme roles; apply through the vacancy rather than a general UNMAS contact address.

2Read the operational context and eligibility requirements

Review the assigned UNMAS section, reporting line, contract category, duty station, travel, languages, education and experience requirements. Field roles can require work in complex or hazardous operating environments, while headquarters roles may focus on policy, management, finance, partnerships or coordination. Meet the requirements in the specific notice, not a general description of mine-action work.

3Create or update your Inspira profile

Select **Apply** in the official UN Careers listing to access Inspira. Create an account if necessary and complete the required **My Profile** fields. Keep your contact information, employment dates and education accurate. The profile can be reused for future UN Secretariat applications, but every UNMAS application must be tailored to the particular vacancy.

4Complete the online application with role-specific evidence

Enter your education, employment history, skills, achievements, competencies and motivation in Inspira. Explain how your experience meets the stated functions, whether in programme management, explosive-hazard reduction, finance, political affairs, donor relations or operations. A separate CV does not replace the online application unless the vacancy specifically requests supporting documents.

5Submit before the stated deadline

Review all fields and statements before submitting. A submitted Inspira application cannot be changed for that job opening. Save the confirmation and monitor the email address linked to your account. Do not assume that experience in one UNMAS country programme automatically qualifies you for another: requirements, languages and contract categories are vacancy-specific.

6Prepare for the UN Secretariat assessment process

Candidates who meet the requirements may be invited to a written test, recorded video interview, work sample, assessment-centre exercise or panel interview. The assessment sequence depends on the vacancy. Prepare examples that show technical judgement, coordination, results delivery, integrity and the ability to work effectively with national authorities, UN partners and affected communities.

Recruitment safety: No. The United Nations does not charge fees for an application, interview, processing or training, and does not ask for bank-account information in recruitment. Confirm the vacancy on UN Careers and verify that its Department/Office and UNMAS reporting information are consistent. Treat payment requests or unofficial offers as fraudulent.

Frequently asked questions about UNMAS careers

Where do I apply for UNMAS jobs?+

UNMAS Secretariat vacancies are advertised on UN Careers, generally under the Department of Peace Operations. Search by duty station and job family, then read the full description. Current UNMAS roles include New York, Nairobi, Kyiv and country programmes; each notice names the UNMAS section, reporting line and contract category.

What types of jobs does UNMAS recruit for?+

UNMAS is not solely a demining employer. Its mandate includes coordination, standards, policy, explosive-ordnance risk education, victim assistance, weapons and ammunition management and operational delivery. Current recruitment spans programme management, finance, political affairs, donor relations and country-level technical and operational roles.

Where does UNMAS operate?+

UNMAS provides direct support to 19 countries, territories and missions. UN Careers lists both headquarters and field opportunities, including mission-based, national professional and temporary posts. The setting is defined by the notice: do not assume a job is remote, New York-based or transferable between country programmes.

Do I need an Inspira profile for a UNMAS vacancy?+

Create an Inspira account and complete My Profile for a UNMAS Secretariat vacancy. The application records education, employment history, skills, achievements, competencies and motivation. It is assessed by the UN; a separate CV does not substitute for a completed online application unless the job description asks for documents.

What happens after I submit a UNMAS application?+

UNMAS staff vacancies follow UN Secretariat selection. Applicants who meet the opening’s requirements may be invited to a written test, recorded video interview, work sample, assessment-centre exercise or another assessment, followed by a panel interview. The sequence is vacancy-specific. Monitor Inspira and the primary email after submitting.

Does UNMAS charge an application fee?+

No.
