About UN RCS

The United Nations Resident Coordinator System (UN RCS) is the independent development-coordination function that brings UN Country Teams together behind national priorities and the SDGs. Reinvigorated by General Assembly resolution 72/279, it includes Resident Coordinators and Resident Coordinator Offices, supported by the Development Coordination Office. It aligns UN entities, convenes governments and partners, advances integrated policy and financing solutions, and leads country-level coordination across 162 countries and territories.

Working with UN RCS

Working with UN RCS means enabling a coherent UN response to country development priorities. Resident Coordinators lead Country Teams; RCOs provide policy, data, partnerships, communications and coordination support. Work is cross-entity, government-facing and accountable for integrated Cooperation Frameworks. Senior RC roles follow a specialised talent-pipeline, assessment-centre and pool process. RCO staff and consultants are recruited through the specific Resident Coordinator System vacancy on UN Careers.

Why Work at UN RCS?

  • Lead a unified UN response

Bring agencies, government and partners around nationally owned development priorities and results.

  • Solve across institutional boundaries

Combine policy, financing, data and partnerships instead of working within one mandate.

  • Work at country-system level

Support coordination in 162 contexts where development priorities and operating conditions differ.

How to Apply for UN RCS Jobs

The route depends on the role. Resident Coordinator and Resident Coordinator/Humanitarian Coordinator appointments follow the official RC leadership pipeline; only members of the RC Pool may apply for RC posts advertised on UN Careers. RCO staff and consultant opportunities are ordinary UN Careers vacancies under **Resident Coordinator System**, and must be applied for through the individual listing.

Official UN RCS application route ↗
1Establish whether the notice is an RC post or an RCO role

Read the Department/Office, title and category in the live notice. A country-office consultant or programme-management opening under Resident Coordinator System follows the normal UN Careers route. A Resident Coordinator or RC/HC position is a senior leadership appointment with additional pipeline and pool eligibility requirements.

2For RCO staff roles, use the vacancy’s UN Careers process

Search official UN Careers for Department/Office **Resident Coordinator System**, open the complete notice and select Apply Now. Complete the Inspira application and evidence the country context, coordination, data, policy, partnerships or operations duties specified. The Quito data-management consultancy, for example, has its own required outputs and qualifications.

3For an RC career, enter the RC/HC Talent Pipeline

The UN RCS leadership page describes the RC/HC Talent Pipeline as the development route for potential future Resident Coordinators. Candidates develop knowledge, competencies and experience across the UN’s pillars of work. Pipeline membership is preparation, not an automatic invitation to the assessment stage or a job guarantee.

4Meet the Resident Coordinator Assessment Centre standard

Candidates who are deemed ready and satisfy the eligibility requirements can be encouraged to apply for the RC Assessment Centre. The official RCS page describes RCAC as a two-and-a-half-day simulation that tests readiness for the role. Passing it places a candidate in the RC Pool; it does not itself select a country assignment.

5Apply to an advertised RC post only from the RC Pool

RC openings are advertised on UN Careers, normally in two selection rounds, and only RC Pool members are eligible to apply. Verify the level, country, language and eligibility in the notice. Pool membership does not guarantee selection, and each application must still be submitted for the particular vacancy.

6Prepare for leadership and country-fit selection

For an RC position, prepare evidence of impartial leadership, system-wide coordination, country analysis, partnership-building and the ability to represent the UN at senior levels. For RCO roles, prepare for the assessment specified in the live notice. In either route, use only official UN Careers or UNSDG communication and never pay a recruitment fee.

Recruitment safety: No. Resident Coordinator System recruitment uses official UN processes, which do not charge application, assessment, interview or processing fees. Be especially careful with senior leadership claims: authentic RC posts are advertised through UN Careers and follow the published RC pipeline rules. A payment demand, bank-detail request or private-channel offer is inconsistent with the official process.

Frequently asked questions about UN RCS careers

What is the UN Resident Coordinator System?+

The UN RCS is the country-level development-coordination system led by Resident Coordinators and supported by Resident Coordinator Offices and the Development Coordination Office. It brings UN Country Teams together around national priorities and the SDGs. The 2026 UNSDG Chair report says it operates in more than 160 countries and territories, with the UNSDG overseeing coordination in 162.

Are Resident Coordinator and RCO jobs the same?+

No. Resident Coordinators are the UN development system’s highest-ranking representatives at country level and are selected through a specialised leadership pipeline, assessment centre and RC Pool. RCO staff and consultants support coordination functions such as data, policy, partnerships and operations, and apply to ordinary live UN Careers notices under Resident Coordinator System.

Can anyone apply directly to become a Resident Coordinator?+

Not directly to an RC vacancy. The official process requires candidates to enter the RC/HC Talent Pipeline, meet the eligibility and readiness threshold for the Resident Coordinator Assessment Centre, and pass it to join the RC Pool. Only RC Pool members can apply for advertised RC and RC/HC roles; pool placement itself does not guarantee selection.

Where do I apply for Resident Coordinator System vacancies?+

Use UN Careers and look for Department/Office **Resident Coordinator System**. For RCO staff or consultants, submit through the vacancy’s Apply Now/Inspira route. For a Resident Coordinator opening, the vacancy is also on UN Careers, but only RC Pool members are eligible. The official UNSDG RC page explains the distinct leadership pathway and assessment stages.

Does UN RCS charge an application fee?+

No.
