About ICAO
ICAO is the United Nations specialized agency that helps States make international civil aviation safe, secure, efficient, economically sustainable and environmentally responsible. Under the 1944 Chicago Convention, it convenes States to develop global Standards and Recommended Practices, policies and implementation support. Its technical, regulatory and capacity-development work helps national aviation systems operate safely and connect across borders.

Working with ICAO
Working at ICAO means supporting an intergovernmental system rather than operating aircraft or running an airline. The Organization brings 193 Member States together under the Chicago Convention to agree the rules, policies and practical support that allow international aviation to function across national borders. Staff turn complex evidence, technical expertise and divergent State interests into standards, guidance, audits, capacity-development work and decisions that national authorities can use.
Why Work at ICAO?
Make air travel safer worldwide
Help States turn globally agreed standards into safer, more consistent aviation operations.
Link technical expertise with diplomacy
Build consensus among regulators, aviation specialists and governments with different operating realities.
Advance aviation’s climate transition
Contribute to global work on emissions, sustainable fuels and environmental implementation.
How to Apply for ICAO Jobs
Once you find a suitable ICAO vacancy on IGO Jobs or the ICAO careers page, submit your application through ICAO's official recruitment portal. Below is a guide on how to apply.
Official ICAO application route ↗1Find the relevant ICAO vacancy category
Search ICAO Careers by duty station or keyword, then read the complete listing. ICAO separates Professional and higher-category, General Service, consulting, internship, Young Aviation Professionals, active-project and Roster of Experts opportunities. Confirm the Job ID, deadline, duty station, contract route and technical requirements before starting.
2Identify which ICAO recruitment system hosts it
ICAO is moving to a new recruitment system, and its official careers page says two systems may operate in parallel during the transition. Follow the platform linked from the particular listing. A profile in the older system is not transferred to the newer one, so create the appropriate account rather than assuming an earlier ICAO login will work.
3Register and build the reusable online profile
Registration is required to apply, although vacancies can be viewed without an account. Create the profile in the system used by the vacancy and attach the documents requested there. ICAO says a saved online profile and attachments can be reused for later applications in that same system; do not send a paper application.
4Tailor evidence to ICAO’s aviation mandate
Address the exact technical or functional requirement in the notice. Explain how your work has improved safety, security, air navigation, facilitation, environmental performance, regulation or implementation support. Check the listed language requirement carefully; ICAO’s general candidate guidance expects English plus working knowledge of another official ICAO language.
5Submit electronically through the listed vacancy
Complete and submit through the official portal before the stated deadline, retaining the Job ID and your application record. ICAO no longer accepts paper-based applications. For field-project or roster notices, also distinguish whether you are seeking a current project assignment or entry into a deployable expert pool.

Frequently asked questions about ICAO careers
Where do I apply for ICAO jobs?+
Apply through ICAO’s official Careers site, which lists Secretariat and field-project vacancies by category, level, duty station, Job ID and deadline. You may browse without an account, but must register to apply. Open the individual notice, use the portal named there and submit online; ICAO no longer accepts paper applications.
What kinds of opportunities does ICAO offer?+
ICAO lists Professional and higher-category posts, General Service jobs, consultancies, internships, Young Aviation Professionals Programme opportunities, active field projects and a Roster of Experts. These differ. Check each notice for contract, location, technical discipline, eligibility and whether it is a roster or current assignment.
Will my existing ICAO profile work for every vacancy?+
Possibly. ICAO states that, while its recruitment systems are being improved, two systems may operate in parallel. A profile in the old system will not transfer to the new one, and the relevant vacancy notice determines which platform you must use. If you apply to notices hosted in both systems, expect to register and maintain separate profiles.
Which languages are useful for ICAO careers?+
ICAO says applicants should be proficient in English and have working knowledge of at least one other official language: Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish. Additional languages are an asset. This is organization-wide guidance, so follow the specific vacancy wording, which controls the language requirement for selection.
What are ICAO field-project and roster opportunities?+
ICAO’s Capacity Development and Implementation programme supports States in safety, capacity and efficiency, security and facilitation, environmental protection and economic development. It advertises active project posts and generic Roster of Experts vacancies. A roster is a pool for possible deployment, not a guaranteed immediate assignment.
Can I send ICAO a CV or paper application directly?+
No. ICAO says it no longer accepts paper-based applications. Submit through the online platform used for the individual listed vacancy and complete the profile requested by that system. Keep the Job ID, deadline and application record. Do not assume an email or unsolicited CV to an ICAO office is a substitute for portal submission.
