About Mozambique
Mozambique is a south-eastern African country of Indian Ocean coast, river systems and growing cities. Maputo combines neighbourhoods, markets and new development beside the bay. Beira, Nampula and Pemba provide contrasting settings shaped by geography, local economies and climate.
Daily life in Maputo depends on location. Buses, shared transport and road connections make movement possible, but congestion and distance can lengthen journeys. Heat, seasonal rain and variable water, power and housing conditions make local advice and a well-situated home valuable.
Mozambique’s international-organization dimension combines development with humanitarian and resilience work. The UN Country Team’s 24 entities work with public institutions and communities on governance, health, education, food systems, climate adaptation, human rights, peacebuilding and recovery. Northern displacement and recurring climate shocks make it an important setting for coordinated response and locally led resilience.

Working in Mozambique
Mozambique’s international careers market centres on Maputo, where the UN Country Team works with government, donors and partners. Pemba is a humanitarian hub; Beira adds cyclone-recovery work. Portfolios cover protection, displacement, food security, WASH, health, nutrition, logistics, climate adaptation, data and programme management. Terms differ across international, national, General Service, consultancy, UN Volunteer and Mozambican-law contracts. Check duty station, security setting, legal employer and travel requirements before comparing offers.
Why Mozambique
Climate-response programme experience
Cyclones, floods and drought create sustained work in preparedness, resilience and recovery.
Complex humanitarian-development nexus
Northern displacement and national development portfolios require integrated operational and policy skills.
Diverse field-duty opportunities
Maputo, Pemba, Beira and provincial operations offer materially different professional settings.
How to apply for UN jobs in Mozambique
Use IGOJobs to locate roles, then apply only through the named employer's official recruitment page. UN entities, NGOs and contractors do not share one Mozambique application system, and an account with one organization cannot be transferred to another.
1Read the duty-station and contract wording first
Determine whether the job is based in Maputo, Pemba, Beira, Nampula or another locality, and whether it is international, national, local, consultancy, volunteer, internship or NGO employment. Check field travel, security, hardship, medical, family and mobility conditions alongside the technical requirements.
2Use the employer's own portal
Follow the original vacancy link and complete the employer-specific profile or submission process. The UN Secretariat, UNICEF, WFP, UNDP, IOM, UNHCR, WHO, UNOPS, UN Volunteers and NGOs use separate systems. Keep copies of the notice, submitted form and attachments.
3Demonstrate relevant operational and language evidence
Match achievements to the portfolio: climate adaptation, disaster response, food systems, health, nutrition, WASH, protection, peacebuilding, supply chain, government liaison or monitoring. Portuguese is especially important for national and community-facing roles; state English and relevant local-language ability precisely when requested.
4Confirm authorization through the legal employer
National and locally recruited roles normally require the right to work in Mozambique. Foreign nationals in ordinary work generally need the appropriate work and residence permissions. Eligible UN, World Bank and IMF staff travelling on official business may use official or diplomatic visa arrangements supported by an institutional letter; this does not automatically apply to all consultants or dependants.
5Verify the offer before relocation
Expect written tests, technical exercises, interviews and references. Before accepting, ask the employer to confirm the duty station, contract duration, pay basis, insurance, security arrangements, travel, visa or permit process, shipment or travel support and dependant eligibility. Do not make relocation commitments until the written conditions are clear.
Ordinary work permission and official IGO travel
Ordinary foreign employment in Mozambique uses the labour and immigration route for the contract, including foreign-worker procedures and residence permission. This differs from diplomatic, courtesy or official status available to eligible officials of an international organisation under the relevant agreement. Official travel documentation does not establish a work right. Consultants, interns and local staff must confirm status, documents and dependants with HR before travel.

Mozambique International Careers FAQs
Can foreign nationals apply for IGO jobs in Mozambique?
Yes for internationally recruited roles where eligible. National Officer, General Service, national staff and many local-project positions may require Mozambican nationality, local residence or work eligibility. The vacancy's contract category and eligibility wording, not the employer's international identity, decide who may apply.
Is Maputo the only important duty station?
No. Maputo is the main coordination and country-office hub, but Pemba is central to the northern humanitarian response and Beira, Nampula, Quelimane and other provinces support delivery. Conditions, travel, security and living arrangements may differ substantially by advertised location.
Is Portuguese required?
Often, particularly for national recruitment, government engagement, community work and delivery roles. English is widely used for international coordination and technical reporting. Some jobs may value local-language capability. Apply only if you meet the stated language requirements and describe proficiency accurately.
Do I need a work visa for a role in Mozambique?
For ordinary foreign employment, the correct work and residence authorization is normally required. Eligible officials of certain international institutions travelling on official business can use official or diplomatic visa arrangements with institutional documentation. HR must confirm the route for your exact contract; consultancies are not automatically covered.
Can an internationally recruited job include relocation support?
It can, but it is appointment-specific. International staff terms may address travel, shipment, insurance, security and eligible dependants, while national, local, consultancy and volunteer terms differ. Request the written offer and HR guidance before deciding whether an assignment is viable.
Can I apply without UN experience?
Yes unless the notice makes UN experience mandatory. Government, NGO, private-sector, research or emergency experience can be competitive when it directly proves the requested expertise. Use measurable examples in the employer's language and show how they apply to Mozambique's portfolio.
