About India

India is a vast South Asian country whose cities differ in scale, climate and pace. New Delhi combines government, historic neighbourhoods, universities and diplomatic districts across an urban region. Large distances shape everyday movement.

Daily convenience depends on neighbourhood and commute. Metro and bus networks connect much of the urban area, but travel time, traffic and seasonal air quality can influence routines. Markets, parks, schools, health services and recreation are unevenly distributed. A well-connected location makes daily life more manageable.

India’s international-organization role combines UN country cooperation with regional institutions. Twenty-six UN organizations work in India, while New Delhi hosts WHO’s South-East Asia Regional Office and UNESCAP’s Asia-Pacific Centre for Transfer of Technology. This profile spans health, technology, sustainable development, climate, food systems, social policy and South-South cooperation.

Working in India

India’s international careers market centres on New Delhi, home to the UN Country Team, IMF, World Bank, IOM, UNDP, UN Women, WHO and specialised agencies. ESCAP’s South and South-West Asia office adds regional policy work. Portfolios cover health, climate, food systems, gender, education, digital systems, data, policy and programme operations. Terms differ among international, National Officer, General Service, consultancy, internship and Indian-law contracts. Check the employer, duty station, grade and status before comparing offers.

Why India

  • Scale for development innovation

Large programmes create practical roles in digital systems, health, climate and public policy.

  • South Asia policy gateway

New Delhi supports country delivery alongside regional economic and technical coordination.

  • Strong institutional partnerships

Work regularly connects international teams with government, research, business and civil society.

How to apply for UN jobs in India

Compare India vacancies on IGOJobs.com, then apply through the official portal named by the hiring employer. New Delhi listings can belong to the UN Secretariat, an agency, an international financial institution, an NGO or an Indian partner, each with separate eligibility and employment terms.

1Find the named employer’s portal

Use the original vacancy and confirm employer, duty station, grade, duration and contract type. Secretariat positions use UN Careers and Inspira; agencies and other organisations run their own systems. Do not treat a UN India listing as a shared account.

2Complete every required profile field

Create the correct employer profile early and address the stated education, years of experience, technical skills, competencies and language requirements. Information in one recruitment system is not automatically visible to another employer.

3Tailor technical and language evidence

English is widely used in international work; Hindi and other Indian languages can be material for national programmes and community engagement. Connect your results in policy, health, climate, digital development, education, food systems, research or operations to the vacancy’s exact mandate.

4Verify category and immigration route

National Officer, General Service and local contracts may require Indian nationality or established work eligibility. Eligible UN officials can have privileges under India’s 1947 Act and employer-led protocol handling; other foreign hires must follow the applicable employment-visa and residence rules.

5Prepare for assessment and offer review

Expect written tests, technical exercises, presentations, interviews and references. Before relocating, confirm the legal employer, salary, tax and insurance basis, pension, visa or protocol process, family eligibility, work location, security requirements and travel support.

International-official status and ordinary employment visas

Eligible UN officials may receive immigration and alien-registration treatment under India’s United Nations (Privileges and Immunities) Act through MEA Protocol. This does not create ordinary employment-visa or open labour-market permission. Foreign nationals on Indian-law jobs, consultancies or internships follow the visa and compliance route named by the employer; an Employment Visa needs appointment evidence and terms. HR confirms status, documents and dependant arrangements before travel.

India International Careers FAQs

Do I need Indian nationality for a UN job?

Not for all jobs. Internationally recruited posts may be open across nationalities, while National Officer, General Service, consultancy and locally recruited roles can require Indian nationality, residency or existing work eligibility. The vacancy’s category and eligibility fields are definitive.

Are UN and ESCAP applications on the same system?

Not necessarily. Secretariat posts use UN Careers and Inspira; ESCAP, agencies, funds, banks and NGOs can use separate systems. Create the account required by the named employer and do not assume a profile or CV transfers across organisations.

Is Hindi required?

It depends on the role. English is widely used in international teams, while Hindi and other Indian languages can be essential for government engagement, field work or community programmes. Follow the notice’s stated language requirements rather than relying on a general India assumption.

Will I receive a special visa or status?

Only if the legal employer and appointment qualify. Eligible UN officials can receive employer-led protocol treatment under India’s privileges-and-immunities framework. Ordinary employment, consulting and local contracts can require separate visa and work compliance. Confirm the exact route with HR before relocating.

Are all India opportunities in New Delhi?

No. New Delhi is the main hub, but programmes and partners also work in Mumbai, Bengaluru and state-level locations. Confirm the reporting site, travel expectations, telework policy, local language needs and relocation terms in the written offer.

Can I apply without prior UN experience?

Yes when it is not specified as essential. Government, research, NGO, private-sector and programme experience can be competitive if it directly proves the listed technical and behavioural criteria. Map measurable achievements to every minimum requirement before using preferred experience to strengthen the application.
