Job Description

UNIDIR is seeking a Geneva-based Deputy Head of Programme to help lead its Conventional Weapons Programme. The post combines policy research, programme delivery and team oversight to address the proliferation and misuse of conventional arms and ammunition. It will develop analysis and publications, manage partnerships and funding, convene dialogues, represent UNIDIR in international forums and support field missions.

Summary of Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement and evaluate the Conventional Weapons Programme
  • Research and analyse policy-relevant information on conventional arms
  • Design data-collection tools and interpret findings
  • Prepare background papers, issue briefs, reports and publications
  • Support consultative meetings, conferences and training workshops
  • Lead outreach, donor engagement and proposal development
  • Coordinate programme budgets, funding and reporting
  • Represent UNIDIR during field missions and international forums

Role Requirements

  • Advanced university degree in international affairs, political science, international law, public administration, disarmament and arms control, international security or a related field
  • First-level university degree with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted
  • At least five years of professional experience in disarmament, arms control, international security or a related field
  • At least two years of experience in conventional arms control or conflict prevention and mitigation
  • Fluency in written and spoken English
  • Proven record of drafting policy-relevant written outputs and publications
  • Proven project-management experience

Desired Criteria

  • Doctoral degree
  • Experience examining arms-control and security challenges from a policy or practitioner perspective
  • Experience working with UN field missions, international organizations, governments or specialized NGOs
  • Experience managing teams
  • Knowledge of gender issues or gender mainstreaming
  • At least one year of experience in an international organization
  • French proficiency
  • Knowledge of another UN official language
