Chief of Section (Tsunami Resilience)

Leads UNESCO-IOC's global tsunami resilience and sea-level observing programmes, coordinating regional warning systems, science, policy and Member State preparedness. The section chief sets strategy, manages staff and budgets, represents the programme and secures partnerships and funding for multi-hazard early warning.

Department: Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission

• Set strategy and priorities for global tsunami resilience, warning and sea-level observing programmes
• Coordinate four regional tsunami warning and mitigation systems and their intergovernmental groups
• Direct workplans, technical products, policy guidance and extrabudgetary projects
• Build Member State capacity through standards, training, manuals and knowledge exchange
• Represent the section and coordinate scientific, government, UN and international partners
• Develop donor proposals, mobilise resources and oversee funding, reporting and delivery
• Supervise staff, manage performance and administer the section budget

• Advanced university degree in earth sciences, ocean sciences or a related field
• At least ten years of progressively responsible experience managing or coordinating marine-science research or projects
• Experience with tsunami warning or coastal-hazard early-warning systems
• Experience working with scientific communities and government representatives
• Experience managing staff and teams
• Excellent English
