Bare Metal OpenStack Engineer

Operates and evolves CERN’s OpenStack cloud at 10,000-node scale, developing Ironic-based automation for the full bare-metal server lifecycle, contributing upstream code and improving provisioning, testing and configuration tooling for scientific user communities.

Department: IT Department, Cloud Infrastructure Group

• Operate and evolve CERN’s OpenStack-based production cloud infrastructure
• Manage bare-metal servers from delivery and burn-in through provisioning and phase-out
• Integrate new server deliveries and provision nodes for scientific user communities
• Maintain tooling for burn-in tests, stress tests and hardware retirement
• Contribute improvements to the upstream OpenStack Ironic code base
• Automate infrastructure operations with Python and configuration-management systems

• Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Computer Science or a related field; applicants may not hold a PhD
• No more than two years of professional experience since graduation by the application deadline
• No previous CERN fellow or graduate contract
• Experience administering Linux in a server or data-centre environment
• Experience writing Python scripts or applications for automation or systems work
• Spoken and written English
• Nationality of a CERN Member State or Associate Member State
• Availability for a hybrid appointment in Geneva

• Hybrid role with an ideal start date of 1 October 2026. Pakistani and Lithuanian nationals cannot be considered for a 2026 start under the stated Associate Membership ceiling.
