Assesses and prioritises science-based conservation actions for sharks and rays listed under the CMS Sharks MOU in Oceania, applying established risk methods, consulting regional signatories and producing species fact sheets and practical recommendations for coordinated action.

Summary of Responsibilities

  • Develop an inception report covering methods, schedule, risks and report structure
  • Apply the Sharks MOU prioritisation methodology and advisory matrix
  • Assess species vulnerability and risk where data and resources permit
  • Draft regional and subregional conservation priorities for sharks and rays
  • Prepare regional species fact sheets for listed species
  • Consult the Secretariat, Advisory Committee, signatories and SPREP
  • Consolidate feedback into a final report with priority recommendations
  • Recommend improvements for future prioritisation exercises

Role Requirements

  • Advanced university degree in environmental science, marine biology or a related field, or a relevant bachelor’s degree with two additional years of experience
  • Minimum two years of experience in conservation planning, project management and international conservation policy
  • Substantial experience in shark and ray conservation
  • Experience assessing shark and ray conservation needs and formulating international or regional measures
  • Knowledge of Oceania conservation priorities and requirements
  • Fluency in English

Desired Criteria

  • Doctorate in a relevant field
  • Competence in other languages appropriate to the study area
