Hardware Support Engineer

Maintains and expands server infrastructure in CERN openlab’s heterogeneous-architecture testbed, supporting scientific users, diagnosing hardware faults and integrating new computing technologies while coordinating technical exchanges with industry partners.

Department: IT Department, Fabric and Communication Systems Group

• Maintain and upgrade servers in the openlab heterogeneous-architecture testbed
• Support scientific users by resolving infrastructure queries and technical issues
• Diagnose hardware and system faults to minimise service downtime
• Install and configure new server technologies in the testbed
• Coordinate technical exchanges with industry partners on emerging hardware
• Organise workshops on server and computing infrastructure topics

• Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering; applicants may not hold a PhD
• No more than two years of professional experience since graduation by the application deadline
• No previous CERN fellow or graduate contract
• Experience with BIOS or UEFI, x86 or Arm architectures, virtualisation, memory, GPU computing, interconnects and storage drives
• Experience with server management and monitoring protocols
• Extensive Linux administration and shell-scripting experience
• Demonstrated Python experience
• Valid driving licence

• Hybrid role starting ideally on 1 October 2026. Eligibility is limited to nationals of CERN Member or Associate Member States; Pakistani and Lithuanian nationals cannot be considered for a 2026 start under the stated ceiling.
