Environmental and Social Safeguards Associate

Supports environmental and social safeguards across emergency and recovery programming, screening projects, reviewing risk instruments, monitoring compliance and grievances, strengthening reporting and knowledge systems, and building partner capacity in fragile settings.

Department: Risk Management Unit

• Screen projects and programmes against UNDP Social and Environmental Standards
• Review impact assessments, management frameworks, plans and safeguard documentation
• Integrate climate, gender, human rights and disability risks into mitigation planning
• Monitor safeguard registers, incidents, grievances and corrective actions
• Advise project teams, contractors and government partners on due diligence and compliance
• Prepare safeguard compliance reports, policy briefs, dashboards and knowledge products
• Support field reviews, appraisals and evaluations and recommend corrective measures
• Design and deliver safeguards training, coaching and awareness materials

• High school diploma with six years of relevant experience, or bachelor degree in environmental sciences, social sciences, development studies or a related discipline with three years of relevant experience
• Progressively responsible experience in programme or project management, occupational health and safety, environmental and social safeguards, risk screening and safeguard instruments
• At least one year of field experience applying safeguards in development programming, including stakeholder engagement and grievance mechanisms
• Experience using computers, office software, database packages and web-based management systems
• Fluency in English and Arabic

• Field visits may be required to assess safeguards implementation
• The role supports emergency and early-recovery programming in Gaza
