Advises UNAMA leadership on how climate change, environmental shocks and natural-resource pressures affect peace and stability in Afghanistan and the region. The role integrates climate-security risks into strategy, programming, early warning, partnerships and climate-finance proposals.

Responsibilities

  • Analyse links between climate change, environmental shocks and peace and security in Afghanistan
  • Integrate climate-security risks into UNAMA policies, strategies and programming
  • Build a common climate, peace and security approach across UN entities
  • Engage Afghan authorities, civil society, regional actors and international partners
  • Identify funding gaps and develop climate-finance proposals for peacebuilding
  • Strengthen early warning and serve as UNAMA’s climate-security focal point
  • Promote regional dialogue, technical cooperation, advocacy and capacity building
  • Prepare strategies, research and reports for UNAMA and DPPA leadership

Requirements

  • Advanced university degree in climate, environment, peace and conflict studies, security, political science, international relations, political economy or a related field, or first-level degree with two additional years of relevant experience
  • At least seven years of progressively responsible experience in climate, peace and security, environmental governance, political affairs, diplomacy, conflict prevention, peacebuilding or a related area
  • Extensive analytical and reporting experience across political, security, economic and environmental issues
  • At least three years of political and climate work with an international or non-governmental organisation in a conflict or post-conflict setting
  • Experience drafting analytical reports for senior leadership under time constraints and in crisis settings
  • Experience in or concerning Afghanistan or the region
  • Fluency in English
