Assistant Human Rights Officer

Monitors and reports on human rights in Afghanistan, supporting fact-finding, detention visits, case verification and dialogue with authorities and civil society while integrating protection, gender and humanitarian-law standards into UNAMA field operations and missions.

Department: Human Rights Service

• Plan and implement activities under the UNAMA human rights mandate with a gender perspective
• Research, collect, verify and analyse information on human rights developments
• Apply UN methodology to human rights monitoring, reporting and investigations
• Conduct fact-finding and detention monitoring visits where feasible
• Record verified violations in human rights databases under established standards
• Draft reports, briefings, recommendations and communications on human rights matters
• Engage de facto authorities, civil society and UN entities on protection concerns and standards
• Design and deliver human rights awareness and capacity-building activities

• Advanced university degree in law, human rights, political science, international relations, social sciences, humanities or a related field, or a first-level degree with two additional years of qualifying experience
• Two years of progressively responsible experience in human rights, social work, legal affairs or a closely related field
• Experience with national or international human rights standards, instruments or mechanisms
• Experience in human rights monitoring, reporting, awareness raising and capacity building
• English at UN Level II across reading, writing, listening and speaking

• Temporary appointment available through 31 December 2026 with possible extension
• Eligibility may be limited to candidates based at the duty station
• Field missions and detention-centre visits form part of the assignment
