Mechanical Engineer - CMS Innermost Region

Designs, prototypes and integrates mechanical structures and services for the CMS detector innermost region, supporting procurement, assembly, testing and commissioning ahead of LHC Long Shutdown 3 installation.

Department: Experimental Physics Department

• Prepare 3D models, technical drawings and thermo-mechanical analyses for mechanical components and assemblies
• Contribute to component procurement and oversee fabrication of mechanical parts with quality assurance
• Lead and supervise assembly of mock-ups, prototypes and final support structures for the CMS innermost region
• Assist with integration and testing of the Inner Tracker and Luminosity Monitors at CERN
• Support and supervise colleagues from collaborating institutes during integration activities
• Contribute to equipment installation and commissioning at the end of Long Shutdown 3

• Proven experience designing complex mechanical components and assemblies using 3D CAD tools
• Experience with structural and thermal simulations using finite-element analysis
• Experience in construction, assembly and quality control of mechanical systems
• Master degree or equivalent relevant experience in mechanical engineering or a related field
• Valid driving licence
• Nationality of a CERN Member State or Associate Member State, subject to published nationality exclusions for 2026 starts
• Relevant qualifications and professional experience

• Ideal start date: 2026-10-01
• Contract duration: 48 months, with possible extension up to eight years and eligibility for indefinite tenure
• Minimum monthly net entry salary: CHF 9,236
• Fully onsite role with shift work when required, radiation-area work, underground interventions and possible night, Sunday or holiday work
