Safety Engineer for the CMS Experiment

Coordinates safety-related infrastructure, fire protection, monitoring systems and risk assessments for CMS experimental sites during Long Shutdown 3, helping integrate and commission safe systems across underground and surface facilities.

Department: Experimental Physics Department

• Coordinate and supervise safety infrastructure installation, integration and commissioning across CMS facilities
• Organise deployment and commissioning of the CMS environmental monitoring system
• Lead review, consolidation and maintenance of CMS fire protection systems
• Contribute to safety system logic definition, testing and validation
• Interface with technical coordination, subdetector teams and safety link persons on safety requirements
• Support preparation and follow-up of safety deliverables and alarm management documentation
• Guide activity reviews and risk assessments within CMS
• Improve safety processes and documentation for CMS experimental activities

• Experience with fire protection systems or environmental monitoring systems
• Extensive experience installing, integrating and commissioning safety-related technical systems in a complex or multidisciplinary environment
• Experience supervising field installation, testing and commissioning of complex systems
• Track record in activity safety supervision, risk assessment and multi-stakeholder coordination
• Initial experience with control or safety systems such as monitoring systems, alarms or interlocks
• Knowledge of safety regulations and standards in an international environment
• Master degree or equivalent relevant experience in mechanical engineering, health, safety and environment engineering or a related field
• Spoken and written English and French

• Ideal start date: 2026-10-01
• Contract duration: 48 months, with possible extension up to eight years and eligibility for indefinite tenure
• Minimum monthly net entry salary: CHF 9,236
• Fully onsite role with underground interventions, radiation-area work and possible night, Sunday or holiday work
• Medical clearance is required before a contract offer is confirmed
