Asia Pacific REDD+ Safeguards Expert

Provides Asia-Pacific technical assistance on REDD+ social and environmental safeguards, supporting country implementation, ART-TREES conformance, capacity-building, coordination and strategic expansion under UNEP and UN-REDD.

Department: Nature & Market-Based Solutions Section

• Provide technical advice on in-country safeguards activities across targeted Asia-Pacific countries
• Coordinate safeguards support with UNEP-WCMC, UNEP safeguards staff and national counterparts
• Organise country missions and liaise with national experts, governments and partners
• Draft, review and improve safeguards documents, monitoring reports, benefit-sharing plans and stakeholder-engagement plans
• Support TREES Monitoring Reports and validation and verification processes
• Plan and deliver safeguards capacity-building events, tools and guidance materials
• Strengthen safeguards capacity for REDD+ financial intermediaries and fund-management arrangements
• Identify resource-mobilisation opportunities and regional learning events for safeguards expansion

• Advanced university degree in environmental science, social science, forest policy, forest management, natural resources management, international development, environmental economics or a related field, or a first-level university degree with two additional years of qualifying experience
• Minimum five years of experience in REDD+, forestry and climate mitigation, environmental law, forest policy, forest management, climate change or related fields
• Experience in social and environmental safeguards in the context of climate change, forest conservation and REDD+
• Fluency in oral and written English

• Consultancy duration is six months
• Position is office-based in Bangkok with travel to countries in the region
• Extension is possible subject to satisfactory performance
