Responsibilities

  • Investigate climate-change impacts on NATO defence across military domains
  • Assess future climate effects using global and regional climate models
  • Prepare studies on NATO defence in future operating environments, including the Arctic
  • Revise internal reports and contribute to peer-reviewed scientific publications
  • Support NATO workshops, conferences, multinational projects and external funding proposals
  • Lead or support table-top exercises and wargames focused on climate-change security scenarios
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary scientists, engineers and technicians on climate-security projects

Requirements

  • NATO member-country nationality
  • MSc in climate sciences, atmospheric sciences, marine environmental sciences, physics, engineering, data science, defence studies or related field with at least 5 years post-MSc experience, or PhD in one of those fields with at least 2 years post-PhD related experience
  • Scientist or analyst experience focused on application or analysis of climate data and projections
  • Proven expertise in climate science and related disciplines, data science or engineering
  • Research record evidenced by peer-reviewed publications and technical reports
  • Proven experience in defence analysis, including modern military capabilities and problems
  • Ability to work with standard software and operating systems
  • Thorough knowledge of one NATO language, with English used for most CMRE work

Additional info

  • Salary: EUR 5,879.80 monthly as 2026 NATO pay basis
  • Three-year definite-duration contract, renewable subject to business needs and performance
  • Duties may include work aboard Centre or chartered vessels and temporary duty travel within and outside NATO boundaries
  • Applications must include relevant publications, diplomas showing highest education level and a CV
  • Appointment is subject to security clearance and medical-file approval
